Education
PhD – Chemical Engineering – Texas A&M University, 2007
MSc – Chemical Engineering – Texas A&M University, 2004
BSc – Chemical Engineering – Ege University, 2002
Dr. Mert Atilhan is a Professor of Chemical and Paper Engineering at Western Michigan University. His research integrates experimental work with computational chemical engineering to develop advanced materials including solvents, polymers, and nanostructures for applications such as energy storage, gas capture and separation, hydrogen storage, lithium-ion batteries, and sustainable industrial processes. His work aims to reduce carbon intensity and advance next-generation clean energy systems.
He has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles (H-index: 51), secured more than $10 million in research funding from agencies such as the NSF and DOE, and ranks among WMU’s top 10 most-published faculty. Recognized among the top 2% of scientists globally (Stanford University), he also leads WMU’s Hub for Innovation and Research in Environment and Energy Sustainability (HIREES) and actively mentors students from high school through the postdoctoral level.
Teaching
I teach core and advanced chemical engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including thermodynamics, mass transfer, and energy management, advanced thermodynamics, advanced mathematics for chemical engineering. My philosophy emphasizes conceptual clarity, active engagement, and practical relevance, and preparing students to lead in the fields of energy, environment, and innovation.
Services
In addition to teaching and research, I actively contribute to institutional and community growth. I serve on the University Research Policies Council, help shape the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum, and mentor science outreach initiatives. I regularly engage with local high schools, lead science project collaborations with the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center (KAMS), and support STEM education through hands-on outreach.
From the lab to life
The Journey So Far…

This blog is where I explore science with curiosity and purpose. I share insights from the lab, breakthroughs from the field, and the story behind the experiments and what fuels our questions and drives our discoveries. From advanced materials and clean energy to the future of water and air, every post aims to make complex science accessible and inspiring.
